Cobra were crowned champions of the MRU Super League competition
last weekend. But the manner in which they were handed the title
left Cobra somewhat disappointed. Down to play their last match
of the league against SMS Old Boys at the UPM Ground in Serdang,
Cobra were left aghast when their opponents simply handed them
a walkover!
SMS
Old Boys were also the “whipping boys” of
the other teams in the competition and finished sixth and last
in the
rankings. But as Cobra coach Mohd Romli Saad put it, there was
simply no reason for SMS Old Boys to concede a walkover.
“SMS
Old Boys displayed poor sporting spirit and professionalism.
We are very disappointed
with the walkover. We wanted to win this
last match and celebrate victory and the title in grand fashion.
“We were also expecting SMS Old Boys to put up a good fight
in this last match,” an annoyed Mohd Romli stated.
As it was, too few SMS Old Boys players turned up for the match
at UPM and team officials were forced to concede the walkover.
It was learnt that the reason for the players not turning up was
to avoid a thrashing from Cobra.
Cobra ended the second round with a 21-12 win over defending champions
NS Wanderers, 30-8 over JLJ DiRaja and a 48-7 thrashing of RMAF
Blackhawks. The match against one another team, Staroba was abandoned
due to heavy rain with Cobra leading 5-0.
SMS Old Boys in finishing last will now be back playing in the
National Inter-Club Championships of which they were the champions
last season.
In other MRU Super League matches played, RMAF Blackhawks some
measure of pride in beating JLJ DiRaja 23-15 at the Jalan Bellamy
Field.
With that win, Blackhawks have maintained their place in the MRU
Super League competition for next season.
NS Wanderers finished second to Cobra in defeating Staroba 38-29
in their last match. Staroba finished third. Staroba lost their
grip on the title in losing 12-21 to Cobra in a second round match
with both teams tied on points.
So, it is now left to next season to see if the rankings will
change.
