HIGH FLIER: Cobra players celebrate one of their many                             tournament victories

Combined Old Boys Rugby Association or better known by the acronym, COBRA, showed they are THE team to beat in Malaysian rugby in winning the 2005 MRU Super League title.

Cobra, with their awesome form, certainly struck fear in the hearts of their opponent’s enroute to lifting the title last weekend. Indeed, Cobra’s opponents in the last match, SMS Old Boys, actually conceded a walkover in the last match fearing a thrashing as a number of players failed to turn up at the UPM ground last weekend!

For Cobra, this was their fourth title in the Super League after winning in 2000, 2001 and 2003. Last year, Cobra slipped somewhat and lost the title to NS Wanderers.

But this time round, Cobra inflicted deep wounds on NS Wanderers in winning the crucial second round clash 21-12.

Cobra team manager Kapt.Nazerudin Borhan was quick to point out that Cobras rich history and tradition made all the difference at the finish. “Rugby has always been a mainstay of Cobra.

“This is what we are known for. When we lost the title last year, we made a commitment that we would regain it. This we have done now and I know that we are not going to let it slip away again as was the case in 2004.

“Cobra will be the team to beat today and always. Next season we will be back even stronger with a line-up of players who will do us proud,” Kapt.Nazerudin declared,
Cobra is a club any player would feel proud to belong to. Cobra was formed on 8th June 1967, at a time when members of the Commonwealth Forces and expatriates dominated rugby in Malaysia. Cobra initially had 19 members and four Life members.

The objective behind the formation of Cobra was primarily to cater for ex-school rugby players who had few opportunities to continue playing unless they were members of teams of institutions of higher learning or of the uniformed forces at the time.

Cobra membership grew at a fast pace from thereon. During the early 70’s, Cobra could field four teams simultaneously under the names of Cobra XV, Blacks, Wasps and Fangs while dominating the rugby scene in the country.

In 1985, Cobra achieved another milestone in rugby history by being the first rugby side in the country to have a clubhouse of their own. The COBRA Clubhouse, as it was known then and even today, was established in Jalan Utara, Petaling Jaya.

It has since become a fertile breeding ground of talented players for Cobra and the nation. The Padang Utara field adjacent to the clubhouse and belonging to the Petaling Jaya Town Council was “adopted” as the Cobra rugby pitch.

In 1994, IJM Corporation, the major supporter of Cobra, entered into a joint agreement with the club to build a multi-million ringgit sports complex within the Cobra compound and fully equipped with facilities as badminton courts, squash courts, function rooms, dorms, rooms, gym and a sauna.

The current Cobra president is Dato’ Krishnan Tan Boon Seng with Mohd.Faizan Zain the secretary.

So, 38 years after it was founded, the vibrancy of Cobra still continues to resonate both on and off the field of rugby. If anything, it seems that only more glory days lie ahead for his great club.
