COBRA, the Combined Old Boys Rugby Association, have once again been rewarded for their hard work and determination to succeed.

After winning this year’s Malaysian Rugby Union (MRU) Super League, Selangor Rugby Union (SRU) League and the SRU Cup, their main sponsors, adidas, have renewed their sponsorship for the fourth consecutive year – with an undisclosed increase.

The 28-year-old club, who started off with the sole objective of encouraging youngsters to continue playing rugby after school, have come a long way since then.

Today, Cobra are the only rugby club in Malaysia with a clubhouse of their own.

And again it was all to hard work, determination, dedication and love of the game.

Yesterday afternoon at their clubhouse in Petaling Jaya, sponsors adidas, were more than happy to be associated with a club who were not only managed well, but with a vision.

Afterall, adidas share the same attitude as Cobra – the desire to push oneself further, to surpass limits, to break new ground.

Cobra president Datuk Krishnan Tan, who still considers his club a “poor club,” underlined that nothing has changed their vision despite bagging the three titles.

“We are still very much into development because we want the game to grow popular,” said Krishnan, who himself played for Cobra during his varsity days before injury ruled him out of the game.

“We strongly believe that nothing is possible and that is why we have always managed to rise against the odds.

“The senior team are doing well, part of our grand plan. Everyone needs idols to look upon and when our team do well, there will naturally be a following.”

Cobra have over the years produced many outstanding national and state players and they still continue to do so.

Krishnan admitted rugby is not as popular as other sports, but they are not about to sit back and watch the game slide.

This year Cobra have gone on a big way to unearth new talent with the launch of a three-year development programme.
